A Sweet Success for Village Group
Wythall Theatre Company is celebrating after scooping a handful of awards and making it to the second round of a Birmingham theatre festival.
Sweet Caroline Sweet is a one-act play of less than 45 minutes and centres around the perils of four people finding partners through lonely-hearts columns.
Palace Theatre publicity officer and member of the company Paul Hughes had made his directorial debut with the play. He said:
"We put the production together in five and a half weeks, which is not a long time to get a show up and running. We were awarded the Will Horton trophy for being placed runner-up which means we are through to the divisional final which takes place in Ludlow on April 15."
The group also won a rose bowl for the most outstanding performance and Mike Beamish, one of the actors, received a certificate of merit for his role as Percy Middleditch.
Mr Hughes said:
"It was very gratifying to do so well in my first play as director, but I could not have done it without the actors - Mike, Joy Rodgers, Adam Lee and Candice Nolan."
The festival has been organised by the Birmingham and Midlands Theatre Guild and successful theatre groups may go on to enter the All England Theatre Festival and compete against theatre companies from all over Britain.
