Synopsis of the play:

"Brash but endearing Marlene is consigned to her hospital bed just two weeks before her daughter's wedding. She is determined to be out in time for the big day, but can't resist interfering in the lives of all on the ward in the meantime. Despite Marlen's good intentions the results of her help is equally annoying and hysterical.

Marlene shares laughter and tears with the other patients as the beauty of friendship and the sting of secrets collide.

Devilishly humorous and profoundly poignant with chirpy, cheeky, chitchat, forcible friendships and stirring sentiment, A Kiss on the Bottom is subtly thought provoking and unmistakably amusing".

Overview of the play:

This is a comedy with pathos about three women who are in a
Welsh hospital for cancer treatment.

The main characters are: Grace, who is old and world weary, nearing death. Lucy who is foolishly self-deluding and the hopelessly optimistic Marlene.

Each of the women must cope with not only the uncertainties of her health, but with the inevitable secrets and half-truths which are maintained by the nursing staff and relations.

It's up to Marlene, the strongest and most outspoken of them all, to keep the atmosphere in the ward cheery. It's a task that comes easily to her - you could say that she has the gift of the gab - and soon she is forcing herself into the private lives of Lucy and Grace. Her activities - which are sometimes maddening, although her heart is always in the right place - make her bedfellows' time in hospital somewhat more interesting than it would otherwise have been.
